An album of archive photographs looking at the lives of Austria’s Class 95 steam locomotives. Built in the years following the end of the First World War, Class 95 was one of the first of a series of powerful new designs of tank locomotive, designed to meet the changing traffic requirements of the time.
Originally designated Class 82, the locomotives were initially allocated to many different duties, including work around Vienna and climbing the steep approaches to various alpine crossings, notably the Semmering. From 1927, the locomotives were reclassified as Class 95.1 by DRB and several examples moved to Hainfeld, before returning to Semmering after the Second World War.
Following electrification of the Semmering route, the class was cascaded onto less prominent duties and moved to new home depots at Heizhäuser, Bruck a.d. Leitha, Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and Sigmundsherberg. They continued to provide good service for many more years before withdrawal toweards the end of the 1960s.
ÖBB-Reihe 95 contains good quality archive black & white photographs presented in one-per-page format, showing all 22 locomotives at various points and locations through their working lives. Also includes a small number of colour illustrations. The photographs were taken by renowned railway photographers Franz Kraus, Alfred Luft, Harald Navé and Elfried Schmidt. German text.
