A detailed history of the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn’s small fleet of Class VT 18.16 diesel-hydraulic trainsets. There are also descriptions of their forerunners such as the VT 06.1 (Bauart „Köln“) sets and Austrian, Czechoslovak and Polish diesel units used on the DR network.
The book describes the design, technical and internal features of the VT 18.16 units, their operation on international services such as the Berlin–Prague–Vienna “Vindobona”, and the remaining two members of the class in preservation. Also covers a number of never realised projects including Class VT 20.16 and a gas turbine driven unit following the example of the DB Class 602 and the SNCF Turbotrain fleet.
