The city of Braunschweig, with almost 250,000 inhabitants is located in the lowlands of Lower Saxony in the Hanover-Göttingen-Wolfsburg metropolitan region. It is also an important railway junction, with five lines meeting in the city at the station, which reopened in 1960 following extensive damage during World War II.
