The November 2024 issue of Today's Railways UK is full of interesting articles and features covering all aspects of Britain’s railways, plus all the very latest news from across Britain’s railway network. This month we look in depth at new trains on Britain’s railways, but we also include all our regular monthly sections covering light rail, heritage railways, preservation and railtours, with readers’ letters and our grumpy old man also in attendance.
Feature articles this month include:
Welcome to Wolverton: Perhaps best known as the home of the Royal Train, Wolverton Works has a long and interesting history. Opened by the London & Birmingham Railway in 1838, it is one of the oldest facilities of its kind still in operation and has recently completed the refurbishment of Great Western Railway's Class 165/166 Turbo DMUs. Ian Beardsley heads to the Buckinghamshire town to find out more.
Keeping the Wheels Turning: Behind the Scenes at Crewe Works: Although it is no longer as big as it once was, Crewe Works still performs a vital role in the rail industry. Nowadays, rather than rebuilding locos, it is used to overhaul and repair component parts, and Alstom is currently midway through a project to refurbish the bogies belonging to the Class 390 Pendolino EMUs. Ian Beardsley pays a visit to find out more.
GWR's Pullman Dining Experience: Robert Pritchard samples Great Western Railway's Pullman dining service.
Riding the Taff Valley Railway: Cardiff Queen Street to Treherbert: Mark Lee Inman and Robert Pritchard take a ride on the recently rebuilt and electrified Cardiff-Treherbert line, part of the Cardiff Valley Lines network.
Behind the Scenes at the Ffestiniog Railway: Earlier this year, the Ffestiniog Railway started running guided tours around Boston Lodge Works at Porthmadog. Gary Essex takes a trip to the railway to find out what the tour participants can expect and what progress has been made with the conservation and restoration of the historic site.
