The October 2023 issue of Today's Railways UK is full of interesting articles and features covering all aspects of Britain’s railways, plus all the very latest news from across Britain’s railway network. This month we look in depth at new trains on Britain’s railways, but we also include all our regular monthly sections covering light rail, heritage railways, preservation and railtours, with readers’ letters and our grumpy old man also in attendance.
Feature articles this month include:
London Trams - Keeping Croydon Moving: Many visitors to London may not be aware that a tramway exists within the Greater London boundaries, yet for the last 23 years London Trams (originally known as Croydon Tramlink) has formed an important part of the transport network in Croydon and the surrounding area. To coincide with the publication of the fourth in our series of books profiling the UK's tramway and light rail systems, Alan Yearsley provides a brief summary of the London Trams story to date, together with a selection of photos for which there wasn't room in the book.
Charing Cross to Hastings: Chris Booth takes us on a journey from Charing Cross to Hastings, looking at the history of the route and present day operations on the line.
The Old Kiln Light Railway: The Old Kiln Light Railway is proclaimed as Surrey's only industrial narrow gauge railway and can trace its routes back to the early 1970s. Phil Barnes examines its history and provides a guide to its current operations.
We Got There: End to End by HST: In early August, Ian Beardsley set out on an attempt to travel from Penzance to Inverness using only services operated by HSTs. Although it should have been relatively easy, it provided to be far from it! Ian recalls the trials and tribulations of the trip.
WH Davis: Behind the Scenes: WH Davis is the last remaining independent wagon manufacturer in the UK. On 14 June, Ian Beardsley joined the North Eastern Centre of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers' Railway Division on a technical visit to its wagon works at Langwith Junction to learn more about the company.
