The author, A H Vaughan, grew up in Berkshire, first near Reading where his love of steam engines and signalling began, and then at Challow. After finishing school at the age of 15 he joined the army, leaving in 1960 and finding employment at Challow as a porter with British Rail. After a youth spent learning all about signals and signalling it was hardly surprising that a year later he became a signalman. In 1975 he and his new wife, who was from County Kerry, moved to live Ireland. In the book he writes ‘During the drive from Rosslare to Killorglin I was excited to see mechanical signalling. I could hardly wait to explore the railways of Ireland with my trusty Rollieflex.’
Memories of Kerry’s Railways is the result of his time photographing the railways around County Kerry, with the majority of the photographs reflecting his interest in the signalling aspect of the railways. Images show signals, signal boxes, levers and signalmen. A signal box diagram for Killarney Station, which features gradient diagrams, is also featured.
The majority of photographs are displayed in one-per-page format, and images from Lixnaw, Killarney, Farranfore, Glenbeigh Station Signal Box, Kells Signal Box, Castleisland, Tralee, Fenit, Ardfert, Abbeydorney and Abbeyfeale are included.
