A detailed history of the tramway networks that have served the German state of Mecklenburg-Verpommern. As well as covering the two remaining tramway networks that exist today – in Rostock and Schwerin – the book also looks at two historic systems that have since closed, including the remarkable Warnemünde-Markgrafenheide beach cable car.
The story of the Rostock and Schwerin systems is told from the earliest beginnings and includes substantial details of the routes, operations and the trams fleets at each system. Several maps and illustrations are included as well as useful tables and chronological summaries to further tell the story.
A tramway also operated in Stralsund from 1900 until 1966, and a complete history of this system is also included, with maps and archive illustrations.
The electrified Warnemünde-Markgrafenheide operation, which was in service from 1910 to 1945, was not actually a tramway in the strict sense of the word, being operated as a small train. However it is included for interest and completeness as its vehicles and equipment continued to be used on the Rostock system after Warnemünde-Markgrafenheide had closed down.
