With an output of 4,500 kW and six axles, the E 50 locomotives were the longest and most powerful of the standard designs introduced onto West Germany's railways. Over 190 locomotives were built between 1957 and 1973.
The locomotives were built for heavy freight work and to replace many of the largest steam locomotives still being used in the late 1950s. When they first entered service, electrification was confined to Southern Germany, however the locomotives migrated northwards as the network was electrified.
