An illustrated history of the period between the early 1930s and the 1950s when high speed diesel-electric railcars operated some long-distance train services in Germany. Operation began in 1933 when the 'Flying Hamburger' started operating between Berlin and Hamburg, with an average speed of just over 125 km/h.
By the start of World War 2 in 1939, over 30 cities were linked by these express railcar services. Following the war, the units were often too small to operate on these long-distance routes and were gradually replaced with longer trains.
This book traces the history of this interesting period in Germany railway history and also looks at the uses of the railcars during the war. The book also includes a look at some of the early prototype high-speed railcars which did not make it into production.
