The changing history of the Berlin S-Bahn. This DVD relates the history of the Berlin S-Bahn with particular reference to the routes and S-Bahn units.
The system originated in 1924 with the electrification of the line from Stettiner Bahnhof to Bernau. Initially, new units of the "Bernau" and "Oranienburg" types were introduces to operate services, but these were soon joined in 1928 by the "Stadtbahn" type, which was built in large numbers. Their smart red and yellow livery soon became an icon of modern local transport.
The Second World War, the political division and the building of the Berlin Wall left their mark on the Berlin S-Bahn network for a long time. Berliner S-Bahn: Ein Jahrhundert elektrisch durch die Stadt DVD illustrates the vehicle and routes in use both before and after the war, including new trains in the ET 170 and 270 series.
The gradual decline of S-Bahn services in West Berlin prior to the takeover by the BVG and the transformational arrival of Class 480 units is also related. Other topics featured include ghost stations, Class 481 and the slow replacement of the older trains
