This is a comprehensively illustrated history of the first generation Diesel Multiple Units types, explaining the background behind their introduction, their workings and later modifications.
Coverage is by class and over 150 colour photographs show the many and varied liveries carried by the units and are accompanied by very detailed captions. The images chosen follow the development of each class from the initial standard green livery through to the many multiĀcolour ones chosen later in the lives of the units.
For each type, a short history is provided, followed by a series of photographs taken through the units' working lives with British Railways (and a few examples which continued in service in the privatisation era).
