Blackpool resident and tramway historian Steve Palmer has put together this pictorial account of some of the highlights from the history of Blackpool’s famous tramway.
The first few chapters tell the story of the Marton route, Blackpool’s last surviving inland tram route which closed in 1962, including an account of its last evening of operation. There are then photos of preserved Blackpool trams at Crich Tramway Village and the East Anglia Transport Museum, and a few short chapters on ex-Blackpool trams in the USA in locations as diverse as San Francisco; Seashore Trolley Museum, Maine; and the now-closed Trolleyville Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.
The last few chapters look at the popular annual “Tram Sunday” vintage vehicle event in Fleetwood, the Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramroad centenary celebrations of 1998 and the trams restored and returned to Blackpool in preparation for the festivities including Blackpool & Fleetwood cars 2 and 40, Marton 31 and Blackpool 167. Another highlight of that year was the visit of Tram Power’s experimental City Class tram on test.
