In 1838 the first long distance, inter-city route was formed by the newly constructed London & Birmingham Railway arriving at Curzon Street station in Birmingham, on an adjacent platform to that of the Grand Junction Railway and in doing so forming a railway link between London, Manchester and Liverpool. Following this was the construction of railways to both Gloucester and Derby; with Derby forming a connection on to Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds. The railway construction of the West Midlands is explored here through a collection of photographs which show how the railways in the area have evolved over the last century.
