The Giant's Causeway Tramway was a 3 ft gauge electric railway that operated for just over 9 miles on the coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland, between Portrush and the Giant's Causeway. This book contains a detailed account and history of the tramway. It was first published in 1964 but this 2021-published edition contains the original text, redesigned and with the addition of new photographs, which now number 67 in total.
The book was inspired by a 1948 presentation given by the author, J H McGuigan, to the Irish Railway Record Society, which led to further extensive research and discussion with tramway managers and tram crews.
Eleven chapters cover all aspects of the tramway including the early days, operation, the First World War, the Second World War and after. Lack of maintenance meant that by 1949 the track was in very poor condition and difficult financial conditions meant closure was inevitable. The assets of the tramway were sold off piecemeal and the company was finally wound up in 1952.
The Giant’s Causeway Tramway is a remarkable account of the pioneering narrow gauge tramway. Also includes eight appendices giving details of locomotives, rolling stock, tickets and fares etc. 120 pages.
