A collection of almost 250 high quality colour and black-and-white images of the railways of Scotland taken during the last years of main line steam operation in the country. The focus is on the various types of steam locomotive still in use with British Railways at this time, which ranged from old pre-Grouping classes, to the many LNER and LMS designs introduced after 1923 and the various BR Standard Class varieties.
The locomotives are pictured at a multitude of locations across Scotland, from the bustling cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow – including their environs – to places on the main lines radiating southward, such as Burnmouth and Beattock. Several sites on the Waverley route are included, in addition to the Ayrshire coast, Stirling, Alloa, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth, etc.
The West Highland and the far north line to Thurso and Wick are also featured. The images have been taken at the lineside, in stations, sheds, workshops and industrial locations, and together comprise a fascinating record of the end of steam traction in Scotland.
The images are presented in one or two-per-page format, with approximately one-third in colour and two-thirds in black and white. Informative captions are provided to accompany every photograph. 160 pages. Hardback.
