A photographic album recording steam traction on the section of East Coast Main Line south from York, and around the many lines of East Anglia in the period from 1948 to 1968. The book follows the decline of steam during this period of great change and highlights the huge variety that could still be found, with no fewer than 43 different locomotive classes illustrated.
The book is divided into six main sections:
- Following the East Coast Main Line south from York to London
- Touring East Suffolk with a trip from London to Great Yarmouth
- Norwich an the surrounding branch lines
- Visiting March Shed, Lincoln and New Holland
- Travelling on the Midland & Great Northern Joint Line from Great Yarmouth to King’s Lynn
- East Anglia’s survivors: Steam locomotives entering preservation
Many of the locations featured have now changed almost beyond recognition. Photographs are taken at trackside, within busy stations and in and around motive power depots. All are presented in two-per-page format and all are fully captioned.
The final section of East Anglia and the East Coast Railways: The Late 1940s to the Late 1960s contains interesting pictures of Oliver Cromwell on its way to preservation at Bressingham in 1968, and images of other withdrawn locos that subsequently survived into the 21st century. 96 pages. Over 180 photographs.
