Many of the photographs are of highly artistic composition, often taken in spectacular lighting conditions to great effect. Some illustrations depict railway staff at work or at rest, capturing the operating atmosphere of the railway; others show familiar locations from less-familiar angles, providing a fresh perspective of the scene.
The author, an accomplished photographer, is part of the NYMR's Motive Power Department, and consequently has access to views and locations which are not usually available to the general public, making this a unique photographic record.
